The following documentation was extracted from a draft report by Birch (1991): Instrumentation Aanderaa RCM4 current meters were moored 10 m off bottom at four sites. The RCM4's use a large vane to orient the current meter into the flow; a magnetic compass measures direction and the rate of rotor revolutions determines the speed. All were equipped with temperature and conductivity sensors. Two of the current meters at the Boundary Passage (s/n 3695) and Victoria-Port Angeles Sills (s/n 3684) were also equipped with pressure sensors. Sampling interval was set at 30 minutes. Moorings The current meters were attached to taut sub-surface moorings. Expected peak current speeds were estimated and the moorings were designed with assistance of a static analyses mooring program (Bell, 1977). The aim was to minimize vertical deflection of the mooring components and to limit the tilt of the current meters to within an acceptable range. Current speeds within Boundary Passage reach 150 cm/sec, necessitating 1360 lb. sub-surface buoyancy and 2500 lb. anchor. Current speeds were less at the remaining sites and about 400 lbs. buoyancy and 750 lb. anchor were adequate. Instrument Specifications (Aanderaa RCM4) Direction: The magnetic compass has a resolution of 0.35/ and a specified accuracy of + 5/. The current velocities were broken into major and minor components, up-strait and cross-strait, respectively. As such the absolute directional accuracy was not as critical. Speed: Both Savonius and the newer paddle wheel rotors were used (Paddle wheels on s/n 8830, 8831 and 8833). Accuracy is specified by Aanderaa to be + 1 cm/sec or + 2% of the speed. Loder and Hamilton (1990) have noted a degradation of up to 20% in paddle wheel speeds due to misalignment caused by mooring vibration at speeds greater than 80 cm/s. Speeds from two RCM4's on the Boundary Passage mooring, 10 m apart, one with a Savonius rotor and one with a paddle wheel, were compared. A least-squares linear regression indicated general agree- ment to within 5 cm/s. Temperature: All the RCM4's had a temperature range of -2.5 to 21/C. The stated resolution/accuracy is + 0.023/0.25/C. Conductivity: The conductivity ranges were restricted in order to in- crease the resolution, particularly for the deeper sites within the Strait of Georgia where changes associated with renewal events were likely to be subtle. The accuracy of the conductivity is stated to be + 0.025 mmho/cm however comparison with CTD profile data suggest that + 0.3 is more appropriate. The resolution was dependent on the range: Data Processing The magnetic data tapes from the RCM4's were translated using an Applied Microsystems Ltd. 769D translator. Checks were made to ensure that the number of records matched that expected. The raw data were then edited for spikes, usually due to a misread of stuck encoder pin. Following application of calibration coefficients and conversion to engineering units, further first-difference checks were made. The speed and direction data were converted into major (up-channel) and minor (cross-channel) components.
