They were analyzed in a temperature-controlled lab on a Guildline 8400B Salinometer standardized with IAPSO standard seawater within 26-30 days after collection. For details, see document QF2024-029SAL*.xlsx. Nutrient samples were collected in plastic tubes and quick frozen in aluminum blocks stored in a -20C freezer. All samples were returned to the Institute of Ocean Sciences and they were analyzed using an Astoria-Pacific Analyzer following methods described in IOS Nutrient Methods (1996) Barwell-Clarke, J. and F. Whitney. For details see document QF2024-029_NUTS*.xlsx. Chlorophyll samples were filtered onto 25mm GF/F filters after collection, and immediately frozen and stored in a -80C freezer. All samples were returned to the Institute of Ocean Sciences and analyzed 3 weeks after collection on a Turner Trilogy7200-000 fluorometer. Fluorescence readings taken before and after sample acidification were used to calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations. For further details on methodology, see document QF 2024-029_CHL_*.xlsx Methodology sheet. NOTE: Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. No flags or comments are assigned for Phaeo-Pigment values. References: 1. Barwell-Clarke, J. and Whitney, F. 1996. Institute of Ocean Sciences Nutrient Methods and Analysis. The data are provided only as a rough guide to ambient conditions. Oxygen:Dissolved, Conductivity, PAR and Fluorescence:URU:Wetlabs data are nominal and unedited except that some records were removed in editing temperature and salinity. There were only 6 salinity calibration samples taken during this cruise, of which only 3 were below 5m. THe deep samples were lower than bottle salinity by 0.003psu or less, and low by up to 0.005psu allowing for incomplete flushing of Niskin bottles. The differences are much larger for the surface samples, but differences in timing of CTD and bottle sampling and high local salinity gradients make these comparisons unsuitable for calibration checks. Salinity is likely good to +/-0.005psu. Extracted chlorophyll samples were mainly gathered at the surface using a bucket, but 3 samples came from a Niskin bottle at 5m. CTD fluorescence data are spiky above 1m, so CTD data for comparison were drawn from about 1.5 to 2m. The ratio of CTD Fluorescence to Extracted CHL samples was somewhat lower than usual for surface samples, but for the samples from 5m the fluorescence was about 70% of the CHL samples and the ratio of fluorescence to CHL dropped with increasing CHL, as is usually seen from these sensors. The sensor appears to have performed well. Oxygen:Dissolved:SBE values cannot be confirmed as there was no calibration sampling for dissolved oxygen. Surface saturation values were between 85% and 165% with all values <100% coming from areas where vertical mixing may be strong.
