Name Units Fmla Pad Coefficients ! ---------- -------- ---- ------ ------------ Salinity PSS-78 10 -99 () (0.11 1) $END *COMMENTS Sampling System --------------- The seawater is drawn from a 20-cm x 56-cm standpipe, flush with the hull and located 4.5 metres below the water line, and pumped approximately 50 metres through a 5-cm stainless steel insulated pipe up to the main lab. Between the intake and the pump is a 24 x 24-cm stainless steel strainer (1/2-cm grid). The pump is a Moyno model 2L6 stainless steel progressive cavity pump with flow and pressure control. In the lab the seawater flows through an MSRC VDB-1 VORTEX debubbler and then into a SeaBird Model 45 Seacat thermosalinograph with a dedicated flow meter inline before the exhaust. A Wet Labs flow-through fluorometer is mounted and plumbed in parallel to the 45 Seacat thermosalinograph with a dedicated flow meter inline before the exhaust. Flow to the fluorometer can be stopped to enable cleaning. TSG Data Processing ------------------- There were many problems with flow to the TSG in the first part of the cruise with frequent 0 flow rates and some instances of negative flow rates. Log records mention suspected clogging of the loop and problems with the debubbler. The fluorometer had a separate flow meter which also registered some very low rates but also some very high ones. The negative flow rates suggest a problem with the meter rather than the flow, but comparisons with co-incident CTD casts suggests that data were not reliable when negative flows were recorded. Flow rates tended to be bad in both systems at the same time, but not in the same way and not as extensive in the fluorometer flow. Data were removed from channels Temperature:Intake, Temperature:Lab, Salinity, Conductivity and Sigma-T where flow to the the TSG was very low. Fluorescence data were removed where flows were very low or very high or highly variable. The comparisons of TSG data with that from co-incident CTD casts was extremely noisy with most outliers coming from inlet casts where near-surface gradients tend to be high. From casts in open waters the intake temperature values look reasonable and TSG salinity appeared to be low by about 0.11psu when compared to CTD data and loop samples. This is likely due primarily to bubbles, so results are variable. Differences between intake and lab temperatures in the open waters look typical for the season. TSG fluorescence was about 50% of extracted chlorophyll loop samples which is typical of these fluorometers when chlorophyll values are relatively high, but TSG values are often lower than expected when CHL is low. Values were about 70% of CTD fluorescence. TSG Salinity was recalibrated by adding 0.11psu. TSG Salinity is reported with 3 decimal places to indicate less confidence than usual.
