They were analyzed in a temperature-controlled lab on a Guildline 8400B Salinometer standardized with IAPSO standard seawater within 3-5 days after collection. For details, see document QF2023-022SAL*.xlsx. Nutrient samples were collected in plastic tubes and quick frozen in aluminum blocks stored in a -20C freezer. All samples were returned to the Institute of Ocean Sciences and they were analyzed using an Astoria-Pacific Analyzer following methods described in IOS Nutrient Methods (1996) Barwell-Clarke, J. and F. Whitney. For details see document QF2023-022_NUTS*.xlsx. Chlorophyll samples were filtered onto 25mm GF/F filters after collection, and immediately frozen and stored in a -80C freezer. All samples were returned to the Institute of Ocean Sciences and analyzed 1 week after the cruise on a Turner Trilogy7200-000. Fluorescence readings taken before and after sample acidification were used tp calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations. NOTE: Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. No flags or comments are assigned for Phaeo-Pigment values For further details on methodology, see document QF 2023-022_CHL_*.xlsx Methodology sheet. References: 1. CTD conductivity and salinity channels were removed since all data were bad. Extracted chlorophyll samples were available, mostly from the surface. The comparison of fluorescence values with chlorophyll followed had a little more scatter than usual. The CHL samples likely came from a little higher in the water column than the fluorescence readings. For some records there are no bottle salinity samples available, and the CTD salinity is unreliable. But salinity is necessary to derive dissolved oxygen in mass units and to correct silicate values where salinity is <25psu. An estimate of Salinity:T0:C0 based on the bottle comparison was used for both processes and tests showed that results were good with differences extremely small (<0.05%) compared to calculations using bottle salinity values. Channel Oxygen:Dissolved:SBE is only reported for surface samples for events #32 to #48 since sub-surface data had many spikes and offset sections. Accuracy cannot be assessed as there was no calibration sampling for dissolved oxygen. The surface oxygen saturation values ranged from 80% to 130%. While not sufficient to establish accuracy, the values are reasonable for this region where local variability is often very high.
