Samples were extracted in 90% acetone at -20C for 24 hours in the lab and analyzed on a Turner 10AU fluorometer calibrated with commercially pure chlorophyll a standard (Sigma). Fluorescence readings taken before and after acidification were used to calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations (Holm-Hansen et al 1965). Chlorophyll samples were analyzed at IOS in Room 2423 ~2 weeks after the cruise. The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the CV% (std dev / mean*100). Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. Chlorophyll values ranged from 0.27 to 31.24ug/l in 69 samples. Average %CV for this cruise was 4.04 with 3 out of 54 duplicate pairs having a CV>10% and 0 duplicate pairs having a CV>30%. Our average dataset %CV is 3.80 % for 2013 - 2018 so the overall quality of this dataset is good. For details see worksheet “CV%” in file 2019-124 CHL QF*.xlsx. Nutrient samples were collected in plastic tubes and quick frozen in aluminum blocks stored in a -20C freezer. All analysis was performed on frozen samples. They were analyzed using an Astoria analyzer following methods described in IOS Nutrient Methods (1996) Barwell-Clarke, J. and F. Whitney. For details see document NUTS_QF2019-124.xlsx. The data were taken from upcasts. Upcast data are generally not of the same quality as can be found in downcast CTD files. However, there were problems with the data in the top 5m for many of the downcasts, and the upcast data were collected closer to the time of sampling. For most casts a Niskin bottle was mounted 30 to 60cm above the CTD and was closed at the end of the cast when the CTD was between 2 and 4db with most between 3 and 4db. CTD data were selected from the upcast at 3db. For some casts sampling was done using a bucket sample, sometimes at the end of a CTD cast and sometimes with no CTD cast. Where CTD data were available they were taken from the upcast close to the surface. Conductivity, pH:SBE and Fluorescence:URU:Wetlabs data are nominal and unedited. There was no calibration sampling for salinity and dissolved oxygen and no history of previous calibration sampling for these sensors. No recalibration was applied to the CTD data. While the CTD fluorescence data are expressed in concentration units, they do not always compare well to extracted chlorophyll samples. For this cruise there was extracted chlorophyll sampling near the surface. Overall, the SBE Fluorometer data compared well with the chlorophyll samples.
