Samples were extracted in 90% acetone at -20C for 24 hours in the lab and analyzed on a Turner 10AU fluorometer calibrated with commercially pure chlorophyll a standard (Sigma). Fluorescence readings taken before and after acidification were used to calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations (Holm-Hansen et al 1965). Chlorophyll samples were analyzed at IOS in Room 2423 ~1 week after the cruise. The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the CV% (std dev / mean*100). Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. Precision Statement: Chlorophyll values ranged from 0.09 - 33.97 ug/l in 89 samples. Average %CV for this cruise was 3.84 with 2 out of 29 duplicate pairs having a CV>10% and 0 duplicate pairs having a CV>30%. Our average dataset %CV is 3.73% for 2013 - 2017 so the overall quality of this dataset is excellent. For details see worksheet “CV%” in file QF2018-31CHL*.xls. HPLC samples were filtered onto 47mm GF/F filters and stored at -80C prior to analysis Samples were extracted in 95% methanol at -20C for 24 hours in the lab and analyzed on a WATERS 2695 HPLC separations system as detailed in Nemcek and Pena, 2014. Analysis was performed ~1 month after collection The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the %CV (std dev/mean*100) for duplicate pairs. Oxygen samples were analyzed at sea using an automated Winkler titration system (Metrohm Dosimat model 876 and a UV light source and detector with a 365nm filter controlled by LV02_876 software designed and constructed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography) with modifications based on Carpenter (1965) and adhering to WOCE protocols (Culberson 1991). For details including a duplicate analysis, see document QF2018-31OXY*.xls. Salinity samples were collected in 200 mL type ll glass bottles with disposable nylon inserts and screw caps supplied by Ocean Scientific International Limited. They were analyzed in a temperature-controlled lab at IOS on a Guildline 8400B Salinometer (S/N 68572) standardized with IAPSO standard seawater 120-125 days after collection. There were no duplicates. For details see document QF2018-31SAL*.xls. NOTE: Large errors due to poor calibration of the Autosal were discovered after analysis. The values in this file have been recalibrated using a linear correction based on tests analyzing duplicates on two different Autosals. There was a problem with the salinometer used to analyze samples for this cruise. Tests were run and are described in document “Salinometer-68572 study_20Mar2019.xlsx”. They established a linear correction to be applied to all salinity analyzed on salinometer #68572 between January and March 2019. Based on those corrected bottle values and the history of the sensors, the CTD salinity values are believed to be within +/-0.004psu. Two different fluorometers were used during this cruise but both malfunctioned producing very low values compared to extracted chlorophyll samples. The fluorescence channel was removed for both sensors since values are <50% of extracted chlorophyll values for 3ug/L < CHL < 6ug/L range and <25% for CHL > 6ug/L. Most data were well below both criteria. Dissolved oxygen was calibrated using the method described in SeaBird Application Note #64-2, June 2012 revision, except that a small offset in the fit was allowed. WARNING: The pH:SBE:Nominal data should be used with caution; no field calibration data were available at the time of processing. Calibration is required for each cast to get absolute values, although general trends within a cast are likely real.
