They were analyzed in a temperature-controlled lab at IOS on a Guildline 8400B Salinometer (S/N 68572) standardized with IAPSO standard seawater 5 months after collection. Precision Statement for replicate Samples Collected from a Single Niskin Bottle: Salinity values during this survey ranged from 31.78176 to 34.39151 with a pooled standard deviation of 0.001472 after ther removal of 1 outlier) sample using Chauvenet's criteria. For more detail see file "SWL2017-093Salinity*.xlsx". Oxygen samples were analyzed at sea using an automated Winkler titration system (Metrohm Dosimat model 665 and a UV light source and detector with a 365nm filter controlled by LV02_876 software designed and constructed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography) with modifications based on Carpenter (1965) and adhering to WOCE protocols (Culberson 1991). For details including a duplicate analysis, see document QF2017-93OXY*.xlsx. There are two sets of nutrient samples. The following comments refer to channels Nitrate_plus_Nitrite, Silicate and Phosphate; these data were analyzed at the Institute of Ocean Sciences. Nutrient (nitrate + nitrite, silicate and phosphate) samples were collected, unfiltered, in 16mL polystyrene tubes, quick frozen in aluminum blocks and stored in -20°C freezer until analysis back at IOS, 5-6 months later. Samples were thawed for 2 hours at 25°C and analyzed on a Seal Analytical Nutrient Auto Analyser III (AAIII), following the methods given by Seal Analytical, with the exception of omitting Brij-23 from the ammonium chloride reagent for nitrate + nitrite analysis and changing the sample and reagent flow rates for silicate. Samples collected in the North Pacific and Arctic portion of the cruise were analysed on 2 different standard curve ranges. A salt correction was applied to the nitrate and silicate data. The detection limits, calculated as the average of 10 blank samples plus 3 times its standard deviation were 0.02 uM/0.03 uM nitrate + nitrite, 0.09 uM/0.26 uM silicate and 0.008 uM/0.014 uM phospahte for Arctic / North Pacific samples sets. For silicate values above 50 µM, the value reported is the value measured on the sample thawed a second time, as we noticed the value was higher, due to enhanced dissolution of polymerized silicate in the frozen sample, and no Sp value could be calculated for those samples as we only had one replicate for each of those samples that were thawed a second time. Full details including precision study are in files “2017-93_QF-NUTS*.xlsx There are two sets of nutrient samples. The following comments refer to channels Nitrate_plus_Nitrite2, Silicate2 and Phosphate2 and Ammonium: Nutrient samples (nitrate+nitrite, orthophosphate, silicate and ammonium) were analyzed at Chesapeake Biological Laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (CBL-UMCES, http://www.umces.edu/nutrient-analytical-services-laboratory ). They were filtered from the Niskin bottles using 0.45 µM nylon syringe filters and frozen at -20°C until analysis at UMCES. Samples were thawed for 2 weeks at 8 degrees C before analysis using a Technicon Bran & Luebbe AutoAnalyzer II, following these methods: Nitrate+Nitrite: Technicon Ind. Method No.158-71, 1977 and USEPA 1979 Method 353.2. Silicate: Technicon Ind. Method No.811-86T, 1986. Phosphate: Technicon Ind. Method No.155-71W, 1973, 1971 USEPA 1979 Method 365.1 and Froelich, 1978. NH4: References Standard Methods 4500-NH3 G-1997 (for further details, see CBL-UMCES_Ammonium Method 2017-3_3.pdf) The detection limit for NH4 is 0.14, flagged in yellow. The detection limit for silicate is 1.91, flagged in yellow. Data provided by Lee Cooper (UMCES) Oxygen isotopic analysis water samples were collected in 10 or 20 mL glass scintillation vials, sealed with Polyseal caps and wrapped with Parafilm as a precaution to prevent evaporation and isotopic fractionation. Samples were returned to the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. Water samples were analyzed by equilibration with carbon dioxide using a Thermo Fisher Gas Bench II peripheral linked to a continuous flow Delta V Plus isotope ratio mass spectrometer. The oxygen isotope composition is referenced to Vienna-Standard Mean Ocean Water (V-SMOW): (V-SMOW): d18O = ((Rsample-Rstandard) / Rstandard) *1000 per mille, where R=18O/16O and V-SMOW is Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water, as distributed by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Analytical precision was better than ±0.1 per mille and was assessed by analysis of in-house water standards during sample analysis and calibration to international water isotope standards (V-SMOW, V-SLAP, GISP). Data corrections were made based upon analysis of the in-house standards relative to international standards, which were normalized as per recommendations of Paul et al. [2007]. Data provided by Lee Cooper (UMCES) DIC/Alkalinity samples were collected in 500 mL glass reagent bottles, preserved with 100 microliters of HgCl2, glass stoppers sealed with grease and tape. Total inorganic carbon and alkalinity were both analyzed from the same bottle about 6 months after collection. Total Inorganic Carbon method used: Coulometric titration Alkalinity method used: Potentiometric titration Reference: Dickson, A.G., Sabine, C.L. and Christian, J.R. (Eds.) 2007. For more information including replicate analyses see document "2017-93 DIC and Alk data v2019-05-29.xlsx". There are three sets of extracted chlorohpyll samples. The following comments refer to Chlorophyll:Extracted These samples were collected between Victoria and Dutch Harbor. Samples were filtered onto 25mm GF/F filters and stored in glass scintillation vials at -20C pior to analysis which was done at the Institute of Ocean Sciences on August 8 & 9, 2016. Samples were extracted in 90% HPLC grade acetone at -20C for 24 hours and analyzed on a Turner 10AU fluorometer calibrated with commercially pure chlorophyll a standard (Sigma). Fluorescence readings taken before and after acidification were used to calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations (Holm-Hansen et al 1965). Chlorophyll samples were analyzed at IOS in Room 2423 within 5 weeks of the cruise. The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the CV% (std dev / mean*100). Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. There are 3 sets of extracted chlorohpyll samples. The following comments refer to Chlorophyll:Extracted2 These samples were collected between Dutch Harbour and Barrow. Chlorophyll samples were filtered onto 25mm GF/F filters and stored in glass scintillation vials. Filters were frozen at -20°C initially to fracture cell membranes, then 10 mL of 90% acetone was added and samples stored in the dark for 24 hours at 2°C. Chlorophyll concentration in acetone was then analyzed shipboard on a Turner 10AU fluorometer without acidification (Welschmeyer, 1994). The fluorometer was calibrated with a pure chlorophyll-a standard obtained from Turner Designs, (Turner Designs Part No.10-850) before and after all sampling, with use of a secondary solid standard (Part No.10-AU-904) during sampling to identify any possible instrument drift. Data provided by Lee Cooper (UMCES). There are 3 sets of extracted chlorohpyll samples. The following comments refer to Chlorophyll:Extracted3 These samples were collected between Dutch Harbour and Barrow. The following comments refer to Chlorophyll:Extracted3 These samples were provided by K. Frey, Clark University (July 25, 2016). Suspended Particulate Material: To measure SPM, 0.7 µm GF/F glass fiber filters were rinsed with 500 mL of Milli-Q (18 O) water, dried, combusted (4-6 hours at 450 °C), and pre-weighed. SPM samples were filtered using 1000 mL of seawater. Samples were then dried at 55 °C for at least an hour before being sealed and shipped to Clark University to be re-weighed. Data provided by K. Frey, Clark University (July 25, 2016). Water samples for chromophoric dissolved organic carbon (CDOM) analysis were filtered using pre-rinsed (10% HCl and then Milli-Q (18 O-ohms) water) 0.2 µm Whatman nuclepore polycarbonate track-etched membranes immediately after rosette sampling. CDOM samples were stored in the dark at 4ºC in acid washed (10% HCl), pre-combusted (450°C for 6 hours) foil-covered Qorpack clear glass bottles and analyzed shipboard within 24 hours. Data provided by K. Frey, Clark University (July 25, 2016). For more detail on rosette sampling see file 2017-093_SWL_Chem and Logs*.xlsx. References: 1. Barwell-Clarke, J. and Whitney, F. 1996. Channel Oxygen:Dissolved:SBE was recalibrated based on bottles samples taken in the Pacific Ocean section of the cruise. The bottle comparison indicated that the primary salinity was very close to bottles and a post-cruise calibration showed it to be low by about 0.001psu. No recalibration was applied. CTD data were examined using a graphical editor. There are many unstable features in the T-S plots. Where these appeared to be due to corruption by shed wakes or ship effects the records were removed. Many small unstable features did not appear to be due to such effects or instrumental error and were left unedited. For further processing details see the processing report 2017-093_Processing_Report.doc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This research cruise is part of the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) programme, which is an international effort to make repeat oceanographic observations at chosen stations in the Bering and Chukchi Seas and in Barrow Canyon.
