NOTE 1: Oxygen:Dissolved:SBE data were removed from above 250db due to equipment problems due to biological fouling of the DO pump inlet. Transmissivity and fluorescence data also look odd during the upcast from about 240db to 120db, but during stops those variables have values similar to those recorded during the downcast. NOTE 2: Niskin #15 closed prematurely. Based on analysis of many DIC samples it is believed that th bottle closed at about 39db. CTD temperature and salinity were estimated from the downcast values See file 2014_50_stn12.pdf for details. Analysis methods: ----------------- Chlorophyll samples were filtered onto 25mm GF/F filters and stored in glass scintillation vials at -20C prior to analysis. Samples were extracted in 90% acetone at -20C for 24 hours in the lab and analyzed on a Turner 10AU fluorometer calibrated with commercially pure chlorophyll a standard (Sigma). Fluorescence readings taken before and after acidification were used to calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations (Holm-Hansen et al 1965). Chlorophyll samples were analyzed at IOS in Room 1409 about 8 weeks after the cruise. The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the CV% (std dev / mean*100). For details see worksheet “CV%” in file QF2014-50CHL*.xls. Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. No flags or comments are assigned for Phaeopigment values. Oxygen samples were analyzed at sea using an automated Winkler titration system (Brinkmann Dosimat model 665 for titrations, Dosimat model 865 for dispensing standards and a PC950 Colorimeter controlled by AutoOxy software V3.4) with modifications based on Carpenter (1965) and adhering to WOCE protocols (Culberson 1991). Salinity samples were collected in 200 mL type ll glass bottles with disposable plastic inserts and screw caps supplied by Ocean Scientific International Limited. They were analyzed in a temperature-controlled lab on a Guildline 8400B Salinometer (S/N 68572) standardized with IAPSO standard seawater 14 to 19 days after collection. Dissolved oxygen was calibrated using the method described in SeaBird Application Note #64-2, June 2012 revision. There were many two-sided spikes in the data, but they largely disappear in metre-averaging. The comparison with bottles looked normal. The Oxygen:Dissolved:SBE data are considered, very roughly, to be: ±0.5 mL/L from 0 to 30db ±0.3 mL/L from 30db to 100db ±0.12 mL/L from 1000db to 200db ±0.04 mL/L below 200db WARNING: The pH:SBE:Nominal data should be used with caution; no field calibration data were available at the time of processing. Calibration is required for each cast to get absolute values, although general trends within a cast are likely real.
