Samples were extracted in 90% acetone at -20C for 24 hours and analyzed on a Turner 10AU fluorometer calibrated with commercially pure chlorophyll a standard (Sigma). Fluorescence readings taken before and after acidification were used to calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations (Holm-Hansen et al 1965). Chlorophyll samples were analyzed on board ship during the cruise or at IOS in Room 1409 about 7 weeks later. The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the CV% (std dev / mean*100). For details see worksheet “CV%” in file QF2014-19CHL*.xls. Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. No flags or comments are assigned for Phaeopigment values. Oxygen samples were analyzed at sea using an automated Winkler titration system (Brinkmann Dosimat model 665 for titrations, Dosimat model 865 for dispensing standards and a PC950 Colorimeter controlled by AutoOxy software V3.4) with modifications based on Carpenter (1965) and adhering to WOCE protocols (Culberson 1991). For details including a duplicate analysis, see document QF2014-19OXY*.xls. Salinity samples were collected in 200 mL type ll glass bottles with reusable silicone inserts supplied by Xiamen Cuten Accessories Industry Ltd. and screw caps supplied by Ocean Scientific International Limited. They were analyzed in a temperature-controlled lab at IOS on a Guildline 8400B Salinometer (S/N 68572) standardized with IAPSO standard seawater 4 to 19 days after collection. For details including a duplicate analysis, see document QF2014-19SAL*.xls. Nutrient samples were collected in plastic tubes and quick frozen in aluminum blocks stored in -20 freezer. One set of samples was collected and frozen immediately. Another set of samples from 400m and deeper (to be used for silicate analysis) was collected and stored at 4C in the dark. All samples were returned to IOS for analysis. They were analyzed using an Astoria analyzer following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996). For details see document QF2014-19nuts*.xls. DMS samples were analyzed at sea. For details on the collection and analysis of the DMS data see file 2014-19 DMS report.doc and for data see "DMS summary (2014-19 data)*.xls." The minimum detectable level for DMS is 0.10 nMol/L, so “0” values should be interpreted as <0.10nmol/L. Cesium Analysis: Large volume (~60 L) water samples were collected and then passed through potassium cobalt ferrocyanide (KCFC) resin columns to selectively extract Cs isotopes from seawater. Column extraction efficiencies are generally greater than 96% as determined using spiked yield tracers with resin columns arranged in series. The isotopes 137Cs and 134Cs were subsequently measured on the oven-dried KCFC resins in the laboratory using high purity Ge well detectors. All data were decay-corrected to the time of sampling. A second level of analysis was often undertaken by subsequently decay correcting the data to April 6 2011 which was the time of maximum discharges from Fukushima. Detection limits (DL) for 137Cs and 134Cs were generally 0.10 Bq/m3 and 0.13 Bq/m3 respectively so "0" values should be interpreted as < detection limit. Detector efficiencies were measured using National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and National Bureau of Sciences (NBS) calibration standards (e.g., NBS 4350B river sediment) and IAEA reference materials All the CTD variables are averaged over the same pressures in order to have one line of data per sample. The lowest sample number was used to represent a sample. References: 1. Barwell-Clarke, J. and Whitney, F. 1996. Institute of Ocean Sciences Nutrient Methods and Analysis. For details on how the transmissivity calibration parameters were calculated see the document in folder "\cruise_data\documents\transmissivity". Post-cruise calibration reports indicate that the primary temperature and conductivity sensors had insignificant drifts. Dissolved oxygen was calibrated using the method described in SeaBird Application Note #64-2, June 2012 revision, except offsets in the fit are allowed.
