Samples were extracted in 90% acetone at -20C for 24 hours and analyzed on a Turner 10AU fluorometer which is calibrated annually with commercially pure chlorophyll a (Sigma). Fluorescence readings taken before and after acidification were used to calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations (Holm-Hansen et al 1965). Chlorophyll samples were analyzed on board ship in June or in July-August at IOS in a controlled temperature lab. A number of samples were analyzed on a different fluorometer (plankton lab) and values seem to be slightly lower than those analyzed on WP fluorometer. These are flagged. The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the CV% (std dev / mean*100). For details see worksheet “CV%” in file QF2013-17CHL*.xlsx where * with the most recent date is the most recent update. Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. No flags or comments are assigned for Phaeopigment values. Oxygen samples were analyzed at sea on an automated Winkler titration system (Brinkmann Dosimat model 665 for titrations, Dosimat model 865 for dispensing standards and a PC950 Colorimeter controlled by AutoOxy software V3.4) with modifications based on Carpenter (1965) and adhering to WOCE protocols (Culberson 1991). For details including a duplicate analysis, see document QF2013-17OXY*.xls. Salinity samples were collected in 200 mL type ll glass bottles with reusable silicone inserts supplied by Xiamen Cuten Accessories Industry Limited and screw caps supplied by Ocean Scientific International Limited. They were analyzed in a temperature-controlled lab on a Guildline 8400B Salinometer (S/N 68572) standardized with IAPSO standard seawater 22 to 40 days after collection. Full details including a duplicate analysis are in file QF2013-17SAL*.xls. Nutrient samples were collected in plastic tubes and quick frozen in aluminum blocks stored in -20 freezer. One set of samples was collected and frozen immediately. Another set of samples from 400m and deeper (to be used for silicate analysis) was collected and stored at 4C in the dark. All samples were returned to IOS for analysis. They were analyzed using an Astoria analyzer following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996). For raw data, precision and duplicate details see file QF2013-17nuts*.xls. Cesium Analysis: Large volume (~60 L) water samples were collected and then passed through potassium cobalt ferrocyanide (KCFC) resin columns to selectively extract Cs isotopes from seawater. Column extraction efficiencies are generally greater than 96% as determined using spiked yield tracers with resin columns arranged in series. The isotopes 137Cs and 134Cs were subsequently measured on the oven-dried KCFC resins in the laboratory using high purity Ge well detectors. All data were decay-corrected to the time of sampling. A second level of analysis was often undertaken by subsequently decay correcting the data to April 6 2011 which was the time of maximum discharges from Fukushima. Detection limits (DL) for 137Cs and 134Cs were generally 0.10 Bq/m3 and 0.13 Bq/m3 respectively so "0" values should be interpreted as < detection limit. Detector efficiencies were measured using National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and National Bureau of Sciences (NBS) calibration standards (e.g., NBS 4350B river sediment) and IAEA reference materials All the CTD variables are averaged over the same pressures in order to have one line of data per sample. The lowest sample number was used to represent a sample. For details on how the transmissivity calibration parameters were calculated see the document in folder "\cruise_data\documents\transmissivity". The CTD salinity was lower than bottle salinity by an average of ~0.0017. The Dissolved:Oxygen:SBE data are considered of lower quality than usual which is likely due to noisy secondary temperature and/or problems in the secondary plumbing. Problems were less severe during bottle stops except for casts #18, 19 and 22 from which the SBE DO channel was removed. For details on the processing see the report: 2013-17-proc.doc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WARNING: SeaPoint Fluorometer #2228 malfunctioned during the latter half of 2013. There were large values at great depth that got steadily higher through the year until it was removed from service. The data have been left in the file so researchers can see the shape of the profile. Comparison with extracted chlorophyll is recommended.
