Analysis methods: ----------------- Oxygen samples were analyzed at sea using an automated titration system consisting of a Brinkman Dosimat (model 665) and a PC 950 Colorimeter. File file 2009-40_oxy.xls includes precision analysis. There was a problem with the 450 nm filter on the colorimeter probe such that starting transmissivities for all samples were reading ~60% regardless of their actual value. This problem was not noticed during the cruise by the analyst but led to a few aborted endpoints as the software did not register any changes in transmissivity below this value. Samples that were successfully titrated do not appear affected by this problem and all standardization parameters are reasonable. Salinity samples were collected in glass bottles and analyzed at IOS on a Guildline model 8400B Autosal standardized with IAPSO standard seawater. There were no duplicates. Nutrient samples were analyzed frozen using an Astoria Pacific Nutrient Analyzer with FASPAC II software following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996).File ThompsonNutsJuly17_2009-40.xls includes a summary of duplicates but no analysis of precision. Institute of Ocean Sciences Nutrient Methods and Analysis. Canadian Technical Report of Hydrography and Ocean Sciences, No. 182, 43 pp. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: The comparison of SBE DO and bottles was unusual. It seems likely that there was a problem with the plumbing that increased the response time, and that the problem gradually cleared. A time-dependent recalibration scheme was used for the SBE Dissolved Oxygen sensor. The comparison was complex and the fact that a bottle does not show up as an outlier in COMPARE is not as strong a piece of evdience as usual. ********************************************************************************* Transmissometer #1005DR was calibrated in March 2008, and drifted significantly but steadily until July 2009; then a sudden shift occurred, so that maximum values between September 2009 and July 2010 were very low, ~25%/m. In August 2010 a study was made of transmissivity that led to a decision to apply post-processing corrections to all cruises between March 2008 and June 2010. Transmissivity data from this cruise were corrected by multiplying the original values by a correction factor, which was based on assumptions that deep offshore transmissivity from a June 2009 cruise should be about 62%/m and that drift was linear with time. The corrections produced reasonable results for all cruises. For details on how the correction factor was derived see: OSD_Data_Archive:\Cruise_Data\DOCUMENTS\Transmissometer 1005DR Corrections.doc These data should be considered estimates. ********************************************************************************* *CALIBRATION $TABLE: CORRECTED CHANNELS !
