Samples were out of line in comparisons to CTD bottles and in profile for casts 9, 10 and 11. Sample_Number 163: DO: Leaky Niskin Analysis methods: ----------------- Salinity samples were collected in 200 mL type ll glass bottles after 3 rinses and tightly capped. The samples were analyzed at sea on a Guildline 8400B Guildline Salinometer (S/N 69086) standardized with IAPSO standard seawater during the cruise that followed(2008-30). Samples were analyzed within 5 - 16 days after collection. For details see documents "2008-29_LSSL_Chem_RAW*.xls" and "LSSL 2008-29 (2008-30) Salinity Repo Oxygen samples were collected in glass flasks and analyzed on board. The majority of samples (those in channel Oxygen:Dissolved) were analyzed on the IOS Brinkmann colourimeter system, with 1 station analyzed exclusively on the SIO UV-light based system (in channel: Oxygen:Dissolved2) and 2 stations analyzed in duplicate on both systems. Values obtained from the two systems agree reasonably well, but the pooled standard deviation of primary samples from each system (Sp = 0.061, n = 19) is about double that of duplicates run on either system alone. For full details see document “2008-30 (and 2008-29) Dissolved Oxygen Report_23Mar2009.doc" and "2008-29 OXY_23Mar2009.xls". Nutrient samples (nitrate plus nitrite, silicate and orthophosphate) were collected in polystyrene test tubes and quick frozen in a -20 degree C freezer. Samples were analyzed at sea during the cruise that followed, using a Technicon auto-analyzer following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996). For more details see documents “2008-29 Nutrients*.docx” and "2008-29_LSSL_Chem_RAW*.xls" Alkalinity samples were analyzed at sea using an automated potentiometric titration system. For a description of methods see docucment 2008-29 Alkalinity notes *.docx. For the full data set see document "LS2008-29-TAlkalinity.xlsx" Total Chlorophyll-a (>0.7um) samples were analyzed during cruise 2008-30 on July 23, 2008 and July 27, 2008. The analysis spreadsheets are missing and there were no duplicates. The 2008-30 replicates are from a different area but will reflect somewhat on system accuracy, see document "2008-30 Replicate and SP.xls". Flags and comments apply to chlorophyll values only. For information on methods see document "2008-30 (2008-29) Chl a and Phaeo Analysis *.doc: and f data see "2008-29_LSSL_Chem_RAW*.xls". References: 1. Barwell-Clarke, J. and Whitney, F. 1996. NOTE: While the Fluorescence:URU:SeaPoint data are expressed in concentration units, they do not always compare well to extracted chlorophyll samples. It is recommended that users check extracted chlorophyll values where available. Fluorescence_CDOM:URU:WetLabs data are also nominal and unedited. They are given in voltage units only because the factory-provided calibration terms produced mostly negative values. The profiles have a reasonable shape and the same sensors produced believable values in subsequent cruises, so it is likely that the unbelievable values are due to a cable problem. Dissolved oxygen was calibrated using the method described in SeaBird Application Note #64-2, June 2012 revision, except that a small offset in the fit was allowed for casts 9 to 13. For details on how the transmissivity calibration parameters were calculated see the document in folder "\cruise_data\documents\transmissivity". SBE Dissolved Oxygen sensor #1115 malfunctioned during part of cast #1 and all of casts #4, #6 and #8, after which it was replaced with sensor #0435. Dissolved oxygen was calibrated using the method described in SeaBird Application Note #64-2, June 2012 revision, except that a small offset in the fit was allowed for casts 9 to 13.
