Chlorophyll precision was determined by analyzing replicate samples drawn from one Niskin. For details see worksheet “Precision” in file QF 2008-27CHL M.xls. Oxygen samples were analyzed on an automated Winkler titration system following the procedures of Carpenter (1965). Samples were analyzed at sea using an automated titration system consisting of a Brinkman Dosimat (model 665) and a PC 910 Colorimeter. For details on precision see file 2008-27-duplicates-DO.xls. Salinity samples were collected in glass bottles and analyzed on a Guildline model 8400B Autosal at IOS or a Guildline Portasal 8410A at sea. Salinometers are standardized with IAPSO standard seawater. See file 2008-27-sal-duplicates.xls for information on precision and note the warning below. Nutrient samples were analyzed from frozen samples using an Astoria system following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996). For details on nutrient duplicates and precision see file QF2008-27nuts M.xls. DMS data are provided by C.S. Wong and researchers are asked to contact him before using them. The minimum detectable level for DMS is 0.10 nM, so “0” values should be interpreted as <0.10. For details on the collection and analysis of the DMS data see file 2008-27 DMS Report.doc. Institute of Ocean Sciences Nutrient Methods and Analysis. Canadian Technical Report of Hydrography and Ocean Sciences, No. 182, 43 pp. WARNING: There were problems with both salinometers. Variations in the performance of the Portasal were fairly random from day to day, while the Autosal results were fairly steady for the analysis of samples from the first half of the cruise, but there may have been a shift later and the analyst reported problems with stability near the end. Studying multiple bottles fired at a single stop suggests that the Autosal is good to ±0.005 and the scatter in COMPARE looks similar. For the Portasal the multiple bottle study suggests the data is good to ±0.008, but the larger comparison between bottles and CTD showed more scatter, ~ ±0.015. Duplicate studies suggest that the Portasal was reading lower than the AUtosal by ~0.007 with a standard deviation of 0.003, but the wider comparisons of bottles and CTD data suggests the Portasal is lower than the AUtosal by ~0.003. Given the uncertainty in the comparisons no attempt was made to make the Autosal and POrtasal results match. Similarly, the only recalibration to CTD salinity was to make the secondary salinity match the primary salinity. Recalibration may be applied later if factory recalibration indicates that there was significant drift. Autosal values have been selected for Salinity:Bottle where possible. Where there are no Autosal values, the Portasal values were used, but were all flagged "c", except for those that had more severe flags attached for other reasons. NOTE: April 2009 Post-cruise calibrations show primary CTD salinity is within 0.001. *CALIBRATION $TABLE: CORRECTED CHANNELS !
