All samples were extracted with 90% acetone and analyzed with a Turner Designs 10AU field fluorometer (previously calibrated with pure chlorophyll extract); phaeopigment interference was corrected for by acidification with hydrochloric acid (HCl), as per the method outlined by Strickland and Parsons (1972).
