Sample #144: ALL PROPERTIES: Niskin bottle #18, from which this sample was taken, closed prematurely on a few occasions. The salinity data compares quite well with the CTD, so it is likely that there was no problem for this cast. Sample #143: ALL PROPERTIES: Niskin bottle #17 closed prematurely on many occasions during this cruise, and it appears to have done so during this cast. It is believed that the bottle closed at about the same time as Niskin #11, so the CTD data from that level is likely to be a better match to the bottle contents. Sample #142: ALL PROPERTIES: Niskin bottle #16 closed prematurely on many occasions during this cruise, and it appears to have done so during this cast. It is believed that the bottle closed at about the same time as Niskin #10, so the CTD data from that level is likely to be a better match to the bottle contents. Sample #141: ALL PROPERTIES: Niskin bottle #15 closed prematurely on many occasions during this cruise, and it appears to have done so during this cast. It is believed that the bottle closed at about the same time as Niskin #9, so the CTD data from that level is likely to be a better match to the bottle contents. Sample #140: ALL PROPERTIES: Niskin bottle #14 closed prematurely on many occasions during this cruise, and it appears to have done so during this cast. It is believed that the bottle closed at about the same time as Niskin #8, so the CTD data from that level is likely to be a better match to the bottle contents. Sample #139: ALL PROPERTIES: Niskin bottle #13 closed prematurely on many occasions during this cruise, and it appears to have done so during this cast. It is believed that the bottle closed at about the same time as Niskin #8, so the CTD data from that level is likely to be a better match to the bottle contents. Analysis methods: ----------------- Chlorophyll samples were analyzed at sea using a Chemistry Turner Designs fluorometer which was calibrated in May 2007 using pure chlorophyll a. Chlorophyll precision was determined by analyzing replicate samples drawn from one Niskin. For details see worksheet “Precision” in file QF 2008-01CHL.xls. Oxygen samples are analyzed on an automated Winkler titration system following the procedures of Carpenter (1965). Samples were analyzed at sea using an automated titration system consisting of a Brinkman Dosimat (model 665) and a PC 900 Colorimeter. For details on precision see file 2008-01-DO-duplicates.xls. Salinity samples were collected in glass bottles and analyzed on a Guildline model 8400B Autosal or a Guildline Portasal 8410A. Salinometers are standardized with IAPSO standard seawater. See file 2008-01-duplicates-sal.xls for information on precision. Nutrient samples were collected in plastic tubes and analyzed fresh at sea using a Technicon AAII autoanalyzer following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996). For details on nutrient duplicates and precision see file QF 2008-01nuts.xls. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was determined using coulometric analysis. Total alkalinity (Alk) was determined by potentiometric titration. pH on the total hydrogren ion concentration scale was determined photometrically and is reported at 25C and surface pressure. Complete documentation on DIC, ALK and pH sampling, analysis and precision estimates can be found in the Carbon Excel file from the cruise located in the cruise "DOC" directory. . References: 1. While the CTD data corresponds to the level at which the bottle was fired, in many cases the bottle closed earlier. Notes in the headers of individual files indicate the probable level at which bottles closed, where evidence exists to make that estimate.
