Analysis methods: ----------------- Salinity samples are collected in glass bottles and analyzed on Guildline model 8410 Portasal Salinometers which are standardized with IAPSO standard seawater. Oxygen samples are analyzed on an automated Winkler titration system following the procedures of Carpenter (1965). A Brinkmann model 665 Dosimat and model PC910 Colorimeter is controlled by Visual-Basic program to titrate the oxygen samples. Nutrient samples are analyzed fresh on board using a Technicon AAII auto- analyzer following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996). Chlorophyll samples are collected in duplicate in calibrated polycarbonate bottles (~330ml), then filtered onto 25mm MFS GF/75 filters at <70mmHg vacuum. The filters are placed in glass scintillation vials and immediately frozen at -20ºC until analysis. The chlorophyll is extracted in 10 ml of 90% acetone for 24h at -20ºC, then brought to room temperature and the extract is decanted and measured using a Turner Designs 10-AU-005-CE fluorometer, which has been calibrated with solutions of commercially prepared chlorophyll. Total dissolved inorganic carbon was determined by coulometric titration with photometric detection using a SOMMA (Johnson et al., 1985; 1987), and Alk was determined by potentiometric titration in an open cell with 0.1 M HCl (Dickson et al., 2003; Haraldsson et al., 1997). The accuracy was assured by calibrating against Certified Reference Materials, CRM’s (DOE, 1994; Dickson 2001; Dickson et al., 2003), supplied by Andrew Dickson (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego, USA) and analyzed once a day. The measured and certified values of the CRMs differed by 0.7-1.1 µmol kg-1 for DIC and between 0.9 and 2.4 µmol kg-1 for AT. DIC analytical precision: 0.8 umol/kg. Alk analytical precision: 1.4 ueq/kg. pH samples were collected directly into 5-cm quartz cells and analyzed spectrophotometrically (Clayton and Byrne, 1993) using an Ocean Optics spectrophotometer within 2 hours of collection. Values given corrected to in situ T & P. Analytical precision: 0.01 *INSTRUMENT TYPE : Sea-Bird CTD MODEL : SBE-911plus SERIAL NUMBER : 0550 $TABLE: SENSORS !
