Dissolved oxygen concentrations were determined using an automated Titration system consisting of a Brinkman Dosimat (model 665) and a PC 900 Colorimeter. Nutrients were measured using an Autoanalyzer II, following the Procedures outlined in 'Institute of Ocean Sciences Nutrient Methods and Analysis, Barwell-Clarke and Whitney, 1997'. The samples were frozen on board and brought back to IOS for analysis by contract. Nitrate/silicate samples were defrosted for about 24 hours before analysis. Phosphate samples were rapidly defrosted in moving room temperature air or warm water. Lab temperature was noted periodically, and may be found on the original data sheets; it was generally around 22-24 C. Samples were inverted and shaken before analysis. See file 9839nutr.xls for details on the analysis, turbidity corrections and calibration for the nutrient data. For nutrients, total of 160 samples were measured and of these, 22 samples were measured in duplicate to estimate variability and the pooled standard deviations are as follows: Nitrate Sp=0.858 uM for 22 pairs; Silicate Sp=1.632 uM for 22 pairs Phosphate Sp=0.036 uM for 22 pairs. These Sp values for nitrate and silicate are higher than usual for this procedure. Samples 89 and 94 from station VI04 have very poor duplicate agreement for nitrate and silicate. When the nitrate and silicate profiles for station VI04 is compared with the other stations close by from this cruise, the nitrate values of 22.1 and 22.5 appear to be anomalously low. Similarily, the silicate values of 41.2 and 41.7 are anomalously low. With the duplicates from samples 89 and 94 eliminated from the calculations, the Sp values are much more acceptable as follows: Nitrate Sp=0.59 uM for 21 pairs; Silicate Sp=1.20 uM for 21 pairs Note : The nitrate and silicate data for station VI04 samples 89 and 94 are not reported as averages. See file 9839nutr.xls for details on the duplicate values.
