St-Laurent CTD/Rosette casts were conducted from the boat deck using an A-frame mounted on the starboard side aft of the lifeboat. CTD logging equipment was housed in a small container aft of the A-frame and the rosette in a larger double container foreward so sampling was done in good controlled conditions. Dissolved Oxygen : Analyzed onboard by Pavel Boubnov using an automated version of the Micro-Winkler Technique as described "in Carpenter, J. H., 1965. The Chesapeake Bay Institute technique for" "the Winkler dissolved oxygen method, Limnol. Oceanogr., 10, 141-3. " The titration is done using a Metrohn Dosimat 665 and the end point is detected using a Brinkmann probe colorimeter PC900. The methodology is described by an internal OSAP document (Dissolved Oxygen Determination Methods and Procedures by Bernard Minkley and George Chase). Standard pooled deviation for 8 duplicates for the oxygen analysis is 0.042 mL/L. Range for all data is 4.0 to 10.5 mL/L. Bottle salinities : Conductivity ratios from analysis of water samples by Autosal 8400 "s/n 49462, Operating temperature 24 C, Standard (chlorinity 0.99980)" "Nutrients : (silicate, nitrate plus nitrite and orthophosphate)" "Nutrients were measured using an Autoanalyzer II, following the procedures " "outlined in 'Institute of Ocean Sciences Nutrient Methods and Analysis, " "Barwell-Clarke and Whitney, 1997'. The samples were frozen onboard and " brought back to IOS for analysis by contract by Linda White. Nitrate/silicate samples were defrosted for about 24 hours before analysis. Phosphate samples were rapidly defrosted in moving room temperature air or warm water. "For cruise 9838, a total of 382 samples were measured for nutrients. " The leg 3 samples (casts 38 to 90) were measured in duplicate to estimate variability and the pooled standard deviations are as follows: Nitrate Sp = 0.17 umol/L for 247 pairs; Silicate Sp = 0.55 umol/L for 245 pairs; Phosphate Sp = 0.09 umol/L for 245 pairs. Note: the above Sp was for casts 38 to 90 only The nutrient samples for cast numbers 91 to 104 were not sampled in duplicate and the silicate and nitrate samples were sampled into glass tubes so the silicate data for these casts is suspect and has been removed from the archived data. Oxygen isotopes : samples taken and analyzed but not available - contact Fiona McLaughlin Samples were analyzed by The 'Stable Isotope Laboratory' at the University of Calgary using the CO2-H2) equilibration technique as described in the file : o18 analysis description.doc Temperature and bottle salinities at the bottle trip depths are included : Temperature_ITS68 and Salinity_PSS-78 See file following file for method of determining CTD temperature and salinity at bottle trip depths : CTD_bottle_file_notes.doc "HCH samples were taken, analysis is complete but not available" Contact Fiona McLaughlin for information. *INSTRUMENT TYPE : Bottle MODEL : Brook Ocean 8 Litre !--1--- --2-- ---3--- ---4--- ---5--- ---6--- !Pressu Sampl Tempera Salinit Salinit Oxygen: !re e_ ture y y: Dissolv !
