The nutrient data was converted to iosheader format and then merged with these files. The downcast ctd salinities (Salinity:T0:C0), the downcast temperature (Temperature:Primary and the transmissivity data were then merged with the rest of the data using an interpolation scheme. Dissolved oxygen concentration determined using an automated titration system consisting of a Brinkman Dosimat (model 665) and a PC 900 Colorimeter. See files 9725*.hyd for more detail. Nutrient analysis was performed on an Autoanalyzer II, following the methods outlined in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney, 1997. Analysis done by contract by Melanie Quenneville. Pooled deviation for nutrient data : A total of 198 samples were measured; of these, 27 samples were measured in duplicate to estimate variability. Sample pooled standard deviations are as follows : Nitrate 0.37 uM Silicate 0.98 uM Phosphate 0.07 uM Pooled deviation values were higher than normal for nitrate and silicate, but are still within limits (Barwell-Clarke & Whitney, 1997). The standards which were measured as unknown samples were very close to expected values with little deviation. Calibration : Standards used for these samples had been previously prepared and compared to Sagami commercially prepared standards (see file controls.xls for details). Factors affecting the nutrient data quality : Generally, the problem of alcohol contamination was much reduced. However, alcohol was noted in the storage bags for stations NI06, NI04, VI02, VI04, and GI03. The nitrate and silicate samples were defrosted at room temperature for about 24 h. Phosphate samples were defrosted in moving air for 30 min to 1 h prior to analysis. Samples from depths of 20 m or shallower were centrifuged at moderately slow speeds for 30 minutes to remove particulate (clay or algae) from the samples; both nitrate/silicate and phosphate samples were centrifuged. Although most samples had no visible pellet, the turbidity due to particulate was very low in most samples, and therefore the centrifuging was likely effective in removing the particles. Turbidity was measured using a DMQ baseline. The expected turbidity due to the salt effect was calculated from a series of seawater solutions of varying salinities. This calculated value was added to the measured turbidity; the sum was subtracted from the average value expected in a 32 ppt blank. The difference was the particulate proportion. The sum of the salt effect and particulate factors was added to the nutrient concentration. See the sheets labelled Salt Effect and Turbidity (in file controls.xls) for the calculations. As mentioned above, the correction for particulate was generally very small. Nitrate was not corrected for turbidity because the samples were not different from the baseline. (The particulate may have been trapped in the cadmium column). Initially, samples originating in waters with less than 27 ppt salinity were selected for turbidity analysis.
