A 24-bottle GO (General Oceanics) rosette sampler outfitted with 24 10 L BIO-design bottles was used to collect the samples. See the following files for additional information on the data : 9722chem.xls ---> excel workbook from which archived data was derived, contains more detailed information. 9722_methods.doc ---> provides information on the analytical methods used. Leg3rpt.doc ---> 1997-22 Cruise Report The values of pressure associated with each water sample are estimated on the presumption that the water in the bottle when closed on the UPCAST originates some distance below the CTD/rosette. The reason is that the wake of the rosette catches up with the rosette when it is stopped for sampling. Because the wake is turbulent, the uncertainty of the level of sampling is relatively large (+/-4 m). The average effective downward displacement for this data set is 2 m, deduced from an analysis of salinity values from the downcast CTD and from bottles. The values of CTD temperature and salinity associated with each water sample are derived from the UPCAST (when samples were acquired). These are the CTD values most representative of the water in a bottle when it is closed on the UPCAST, since both the CTD and the bottle are engulfed in the wake of the rosette when it is stopped for sampling. However, because the turbulent wake is inhomogeneous and because oceanographic bottles do not flush instantaneously, an exact correspondence cannot be expected. The calculated discrepancy between the upcast CTD and the sample analysis suggests a mismatch equivalent to the change in T & S over about (+/-3 m). Depending on the vertical gradients in T & S, this mismatch may be important, or negligible. For more information and detail on the pressure and ctd temperatures and ctd salinities see the following files: 1997-20-22_ICTD_cond_calib_&_bot_levels.doc ---> Describes the procedure used in choosing the Depth and Temperature for the geochemical samples for cruises 1997-20, 1997-21 and 1997-22. 1997-20-22_bottle-level_data.xls ---> contains an analysis of ctd/ros bottle levels for cruises 1997-20, 1997-21 and 1997-22.
