The second half comparisons showed little difference between the ctd and bottle salinities. It was found that the rosette was mistripping or double tripping. Corrections were applied based on the results from the compare program. . Chemistry data for cruise 9703 : The bottle salinity data and the dissolved oxygen data is from the 9703*.hyd files. This data was added to the nutrient data in a spreadsheet format and then converted to iosheader format and then merged with the downcast data to include the ctd salinities, temperature and transmissivity. Dissolved oxygen concentration determined using an automated titration system consisting of a Brinkman Dosimat (model 665) and a PC 900 Colorimeter. See files 9703*.hyd for more detail. Information on Nutrient data for cruise 9703 : See file 9703nuts.txt for more detail on the nutrient analysis. Nutrient analysis was performed on an Autoanalyzer II, following the methods outlined in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney, 1997. Pooled deviation for nutrient data : A total of 180 samples were measured; of these, 20 samples were measured in duplicate to estimate variability. The pooled deviations were satisfactory. They may be slightly higher than for fresh samples. Sample pooled standard deviations are as follows : Nitrate 0.255 uM Silicate 0.421 uM Phosphate 0.075 uM Notes on factors affecting data quality of the nutrient data : Generally, the problem of alcohol contamination was much reduced (as compared to cruises 9603, 9611 and 9636). However, alcohol was noted in the storage bags for stations NI02, NI04, VI02, VI04, and GI02. For station VI04, alcohol was also noted in the phosphate test tubes. Draining and wiping the tubes after removal from the alcohol bath is strongly recommended. Regardless of their treatment, a thin layer of liquid (likely isopropanol) was present on all frozen PO4 samples. The samples were frozen on board ship and analyzed in the lab at IOS. Because of the low salinity of many of the samples, the nitrate and silicate samples were defrosted at room temperature for about 24 h. Phosphate samples were defrosted in lukewarm water or moving air for 30 min to 1 hour prior to analysis. Turbidity was measured using a DMQ baseline and was compared to an NaCl blank. The value obtained for the sample was subtracted from the average NaCl blank (n=2). This difference (+ or -) was added to the sample concentration. Samples originating in waters with less than 27 ppt salinity were selected for turbidity analysis.
