Sample collection methods: -------------------------- Sea Water Temperature: - Reversing thermometers mounted on bottles. Salinity: - Collected in bottles. Dissolved Oxygen: - Collected in bottles. Reactive Nutrients (Phosphate, nitrate, silicate): - Collected in bottles Analyzes methods: ------------------------- Temperatures at depth were measured by deep-sea reversing thermometers of German (Richter and Wiese) and/or Japanese (Yoshimo Keiki Co.) manufacture. Two protected thermometers were used on all bottles, and one unprotected thermometer was used on each bottle at depths of 300 m or greater. The accuracy of protected reversing thermometers is believed to be +-0.02C. Salinity determinations were made at sea with a Guildline salinometer. Accuracy using duplicate determinations is estimated to be +-0.002 ppt. Depth determinations were made using the "depth difference" method described in the U.S.N. Hydrographic Office Publication No. 607 (1955). Depth estimates have an approximate accuracy of +-5 m for depths less than 1000 m, and +-0.5% of depth for depths greater than 1000 m. The dissolved oxygen analyses were done in the shipboard laboratory by a micro-Winkler procedure of Carpenter (1965) with a starch end-point tritration. Nutrient samples were analyzed aboard ship by the use of a Technicon AutoAnalyzer using methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney, 1996. Chlorophyll concentration was estimated from fluorescence of aqueous acetone extracts from filtered samples. Analysis methods generally followed those described in Parsons et al. 1972, however there have been various modifications of filtering and extraction protocols. Contact data originator(s) for details specific to individual time periods. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was determined using coulometric analysis. Total Alkalinity was determined by Potentiometric Titrations using the Edmond Closed Cell, Non-Linear Method. All total alkalinity data prior to and including cruise 1999-01 are of poor quality and should be used with caution. Data have been re-quality controlled and flagged, but even data flagged as good contain unknown accuracy errors. Users should consult the PACIFICA corrected values at CDIAC for estimates of these errors. . CFC-11 and CFC-12 were analyzed using Gas Chromatography, following procedure of Bullister and Weiss (1987). In their current form, they not meet the relaxed WOCE standard for CFC's. Therefore the CFC qulaity flags have been given a value of'3'(questionable). The results are in raw form with no corrections applied as stated in the report. For CFC methods refer to the "Centre for Ocean Climate Chemistry Freon Data Report" located in the cruise .DOC directory. . References: 1. Carpenter, J.H. 1965.
