Surface samples were taken from a plastic bucket lowered from the lee quarter of the ship, taking great care to avoid contamination from the side of the ship and from discharge water. Neither temperature nor salinity were measured directly on the samples taken for nutrient analysis, but the casts for these samples were always made immediately after a physical oceanographic station and bathythermograph cast had been obtained. Analysis methods: ----------------- Salinity samples are analysed immediately after returning to the lab in a modified Wenner-Smith-Soule conductivity bridge. For analysis methods of all other properties see manuscript cited in reference 4. References: 1.
