Cruise description

This cruise started like it was going to be a bad one. The loading and securing of the gear took a bit more time than anticipated, one person could not sail because of inconclusive COVID results, the security clearance of one person did not get reactivated on time, the CTD cable had to be reterminated before we even sailed, and we had a SAR call just after leaving the dock. Once we were finally underway though everything settled down and the cruise turned out to be a great success, with all the work done as planned. It was the first time since the beginning of the pandemic that we had a large number of first timers to the program, so the first days involved quite a bit of training. Everyone was fantastic though, quick learners and very keen to work, which helped the cruise going so smoothly. The second key element was the professionalism of the crew. Despite having many new hands on board, everyone learned very quickly and diligently, with the result that no incident occurred with any of our equipment and no major delays were experienced because of ship issues. Finally, the calm weather was our ally in making this cruise such a success.
Because one person could not sail, less DMS/DMSP samples were collected during this cruise. Trace metal sampling was performed, along with continuous CTD profiling on the return leg from Station Papa using UVic's Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP). See the cruise report for details.
We did four calibration casts (three for moorings and one for a glider), and recovered and deployed a mooring for the Southern Resident Killer Whales study group.
The regular sampling was completed during this cruise using a CTD, a Rosette, the Bongo, and the Go-flo bottles.
