Data Processing Notes: ---------------------- Transmissivity, Fluorescence and PAR data are nominal and unedited except that some records were removed in editing temperature and salinity. Both salinity channels were found to be reading much lower relative to bottle samples than in three previous cruises using the same equipment, and a little lower than during the cruise that followed. Channel Salinity:CTD was found to be lower than bottles by an average of 0.0055 psu in deep water. Since delayed analysis and small errors due to incomplete flushing both would have led to bottle values being too high, no recalibration was applied to Salinity:CTD. While confidence in the bottle comparison is lower than usual, it is likely that channel Salinity:CTD is within ±0.003 psu. There were 2 WetLabs CStar transmissometers in use during this cruise: Transmissometer:CTD:650 refers to sensor #1185DR (650nm - red) Transmissometer:CTD:530 refers to sensor #1883DG (530nm - green) For comparison with other Institute of Ocean Sciences cruises, note that the transmissometer wavelength is 650 nm unless otherwise stated. The dissolved oxygen sensor was mounted on the primary pump and all primary channels produced bad data for cast 0037. The system returned to reasonable values by the end of the cast, but there was some evidence of drift in primary temperature and salinity thereafter (not used here). The dissolved oxgyen data looked ok in the comparison with bottles except for cast 0037. Dissolved oxygen was removed from file 2021-008-0037.ctd. The Oxygen:Dissolved:CTD sensor has a fairly long response time so data accuracy is not as high when it is in motion as it is during stops for bottles. This will be especially true when vertical dissolved oxygen gradients are large. To get an estimate of the accuracy of the Oxygen:Dissolved:CTD data during downcasts (after recalibration) a rough comparison was made between downcast Oxygen:Dissolved:CTD data and upcast titrated samples. Much of the difference will be due to problems with flushing of Niskin bottles and/or analysis errors, so the following statement likely underestimates Oxygen:Dissolved:CTD accuracy. Downcast (CTD files) Oxygen:Dissolved:CTD data for this cruise are considered, very roughly, to be: ±0.30 ml/l from 0 to 175 dbar except in areas of very large DO gradients. ±0.20 ml/l from 175 to 300 dbar. ±0.04 ml/l below 300 dbar. NOTE: While the SBE fluorescence data are expressed in concentration units, they do not always compare well to extracted chlorophyll samples, particularly for casts far from shore. It is recommended that users check extracted chlorophyll values where available.
