Analysis methods: ----------------- Salinity samples were collected in glass bottles and analyzed at IOS on a Guildline model 8400B Autosal standardized with IAPSO standard seawater. For details on duplicate analysis see file 2010-014_SAL.pdf. Oxygen samples were analyzed at sea using an automated Winkler titration system with modifications based on Carpenter (1965) and adhering to WOCE protocols (Culberson 1991). The titration system consists of a Brinkmann 665 Dosimat, a UV light source and a UV detector with a 365 nm filter custom built by Scripps Institution of Oceanography. For details on duplicate analysis see file 2010-014_OXY.pdf. Nutrient samples were collected in plastic tubes. Most samples were analyzed frozen at IOS using an Astoria autoanalyzer following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996). Deep silicate samples (400 dbar and below) were analyzed cool at IOS. For precision and duplicate analysis see file 2010-014_NUT.pdf. Chlorophyll samples were filtered onto 25mm GF/F filters and stored in glass scintillation vials at -20C prior to analysis. Samples were extracted in 90% acetone for 24 hours and analyzed at sea on a Turner 10AU fluorometer which is calibrated annually with commercially pure chlorophyll a (Sigma). Fluorescence readings taken before and after acidification were used to calculate chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations (Holm-Hansen et al 1965). Phaeopigment data are provided for information only and no quality flags are assigned to them. For details on duplicates see file 2010-014_CHL.pdf. The minimum detectable level for DMS is 0.10 nM, so “0” values should be interpreted as <0.10. For details on the collection and analysis of the DMS data see file 2010-014_DMS_report.pdf and for duplicates see 2010-014_DMS.pdf. The minimum detectable level for DMSP is 0.10 nM, so “0” values should be interpreted as <0.10. For details on analysis see document 2010-014_DMS_report.pdf. HPLC samples were filtered onto 47mm GF/F filters and stored at -80C prior to analysis. Samples were extracted in 95% methanol at -20C for 24 hours and analyzed on a WATERS 2695 HPLC separations system as detailed in Nemcek and Pena, 2014. Analysis was performed ~4 months after collection. The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the %CV (std dev/mean*100) for duplicate pairs. All pigments below the limit of detection (LOD) are assigned a zero value. TChl-a is the sum of Chl-a, DVchl-a, Chlide-a and Me-chlide. References: 1. The quality of the SBE Dissolved Oxygen data is lower than usual for both sensors because recalibration was based on observations from very few casts, and the fits of bottles against CTD produced significantly different fits for some casts from others. Similar problems were found in sensor #1176 (CTD#0506) on some other 2010 cruises and appear to be associated with CTD communication problems. For Dissolved Oxygen Sensor #1438 there is evidence of hysteresis, so data from below 2200 dbar have been replaced with pad values. In June 2011 it was discovered that the wrong information was used for recalibration of the SBE Dissolved Oxygen sensor. Sensor #1483 was actually used for this cruise, rather than sensor #1438 as originally recorded. The SBE Dissolved Oxygen channel was reprocessed after an initial study determined that the differences were significant. A new recalibration scheme was found by rerunning the bottle comparison. The files were then merged with all the other channels from the original processing. The hysteresis noted in the original processing remains, and the quality of the data is still considered of lower quality than usual. For details see the notes at the end of the processing report 2010-014-proc.pdf. For details on the processing see processing report: 2010-014-proc.pdf NOTE: July 2013: A correction has been applied to Nitrate_plus_Nitrite:Bottle and Phosphate:Bottle data from deep-water cruises analyzed at IOS between 2009 and 2012. For details see the report: Corrections_to_Nitrate_and_Phosphate_Data_2009-2012.pdf $REMARKS Quality flags have the following significance: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 = Acceptable measurement with no header comment. 1 = Sample for this measurement was collected but not analyzed.
