Analysis methods: ----------------- Salinity samples were collected in glass bottles and analyzed on a Guildline model 8400B Autosal or a Guildline Portasal 8410A. Salinometers are standardized with IAPSO standard seawater. See file 2008-026_SAL.pdf for information on duplicates and note the warning below. Oxygen samples were analyzed on an automated Winkler titration system following the procedures of Carpenter (1965). Samples were analyzed at sea using an automated titration system consisting of a Brinkman Dosimat (model 665) and a PC 900 Colorimeter. For details on duplicates see file 2008-026_OXY.pdf. Nutrient samples were collected in plastic tubes and analyzed fresh at sea using a Technicon AAII autoanalyzer following methods described in Barwell-Clarke and Whitney (1996). For details on nutrient duplicates and precision see file 2008-026_NUT.pdf. Chlorophyll samples were analyzed at sea using a Chemistry Turner Designs fluorometer which was calibrated in May 2007 using pure chlorophyll a. Chlorophyll precision was determined by analyzing replicate samples drawn from one Niskin. For details on duplicates see file 2008-026_CHL.pdf. The minimum detectable level for DMS is 0.10 nM, so “0” values should be interpreted as <0.10. DMSP-D and DMSP-T: Contamination in the blanks resulted in all data being discarded. For details on analysis see document 2008-026_DMS_report.pdf. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was determined using coulometric analysis. Total alkalinity (Alk) was determined by potentiometric titration. pH on the total hydrogren ion concentration scale was determined photometrically and is reported at 25C and surface pressure. For duplicates and precision of DIC, ALK and pH samples see files 2008-026_DIC.pdf, 2008-026_ALK.pdf, and 2008-026_pH.pdf respectively. HPLC samples were filtered onto 25mm GF/F filters and stored at -80C prior to analysis. Samples were extracted in 95% methanol at -20C for 24 hours and analyzed on a WATERS 2695 HPLC separations system as detailed in Nemcek and Pena, 2014. Analysis was performed ~2 weeks after collection. The average of two samples is reported. Variability is assessed as the %CV (std dev/mean*100) for duplicate pairs. All pigments below the limit of detection (LOD) are assigned a zero value. TChl-a is the sum of Chl-a, DVchl-a, Chlide-a and Me-chlide. References: 1. Carpenter, J.H. 1965. Data Processing Notes: ---------------------- The salinity analyses done on a Portasal salinometer at sea are considered unreliable. Many duplicate samples were run using an Autosal at IOS and the Portasal. The results showed that the Portasal read much lower than the Autosal for those samples analyzed on the Portasal on June 5th. For other days the Portasal was low by an average of 0.0016 but there was a lot of noise in the comparison with many values within 0.001 of the Autosal, while others looked unstable. Autosal values have been selected for Salinity:Bottle where possible. Where there are no Autosal values, the Portasal values were used, but were all flagged "3", except for those from June 5th which have been flagged "4".
